My sister loves Coldplay. I probably would too but haven't got round to it yet. Not listening to anything right now but I have been listening in the last 12 hours to Matt Redman, an English singer of Christian music. CD (double) of "The Father's Song" and "Where Angels Fear To Tread". It is very contemporary in style with a lot of excellent orchestral and other backing. I like his voice and the songs he writes. I don't think he writes secular music but I might be wrong.

I love harmony, and especially acapella harmony. Two recent acquisitions are:
Praise & Harmony: Awesome God, By Acappella
Echoes Around The World: Hallal Singers, by Spring Hill Worship
A third is Acoustic Hymns by a southern gospel group, The Cumberland Quartet, who have a fabulous bass, and some nice musicianship on fiddle and banjo.

hey there,
music is a huge part of my life. everywhere i go, i have music on. in my car, as i get ready for work in the morning, and even at work on my computer. i love it! it gives me an outlet to express my emotions. as it plays, i get so much joy from singing. mind you, i know i have exactly zero talent in that department, but it just makes me feel better. plus, it makes life interesting for those who are not so fortunate to have to actually hear me. lol!
i was hoping that you would all share the songs that mean something to you. if you have a favorite and want to share why they mean so much to you, please do. i could probably list about a hundred of my favs, but will limit myself to a couple.
right now my favs are:
hold my heart - tenth avenue north (this is the song that i love when i am hurting badly, it is like this song was written just for me to express my heart to god)
love is here - tenth avenue north (my fav part of the song is where he says: come to the lover you who want and you will want no more, i am sure i don't have to explain why that verse is so moving to me. oh, the video is pretty cool)
let it fade - jeremy camp
it is well with my soul - this is my fav hymn. i think it is more because of the story behind it than the song itself. it is very moving to me.
held - natalie grant
ok, i know i said i would only list a couple, but believe me, i could have put many more! please list your favorites here so i can look them up and have a listen. i plan on coming back to this thread when i get a new favorite one and encourage you all to do the same.

If I started listing favorite hymns and choruses, I'd be here all day, but agree about "It Is Well."
I really like Matthew Ward's "To The King." At a point in life when I was getting stressed over a more hectic schedule than I was accustomed to, I heard this song and realized that giving my life to God is a daily need, not just a one-time occurrence.

I agree with Truthseeker, there are so many it is hard to choose.
Two of my favorites are: Near to the Heart of God:

Of Christian hymns (I do listen to a lot of other types of music, however) my favourites are:
Augustus Toplady (1740-78): Rock Of Ages
I like the words and the music and it's very hard for me to describe why, except that it makes me consider how feeble I am and how my life depends on God. It makes me think of totally relying on Him and recognizing that I am nothing without God.
John Newton 1725-1807: Amazing Grace
It's heart-felt and the composing of it was a milestone in Newton's life. A former slave trader who became a Christian and the subject of a recent film.
Charles Wesley (1707-88): And Can It Be
I find all Wesley's hymns have life-affirming melodies and words. I like the way his tunes can go round corners unexpectedly.
Mary E Byrne, Eleanor Hull: Be Thou My Vision
I just like it. Hard to say why
Charles Wesley: Christ The Lord Is Risen Today
Life-affirming
Matthew Bridges (1800-94): Crown Him With Many Crowns
Lots of verses. I like lots of verses and a good bass line to sing.
John G Whittier (1807-92): Dear Lord And Father Of Mankind
It's a lovely tune and the words are inspiring. I think it aptly describes the compassionate heart of God, the one who mourns for his fallen world and longs to be reconciled to it.
John S.B. Monsell (1811-75): Fight The Good Fight
Another good bass line and an encouraging hymn. I need encouragement.
John Newton: Glorious Things Of Thee Are Spoken
Life-affirming, joyful, tuneful, excellent words
Thomas Chisholm (1866-1960) Great Is Thy Faithfulness
I like it because it makes me feel one with God. I know I am far from that but it is a hymn that helps me to aspire to being in greater harmony with God than I am.
William Williams (1717-91) Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah
Another good one for a bass. Lovely rousing words too. Part Welsh so that accounts perhaps for a certain affinity with Welsh hymns.
William Rees (1802-83) Here Is Love Vast As The Ocean
I like it because it focuses on God and draws me into His presence through the Blood of Jesus. I can't approach God any other way.
John Bunyan (1828-88) He Who Would Valiant Be
I like it for its solid, dogged determined faith that looks the world in the eye and fears nothing except God.
Daniel W. Whittle (1840-1901) I Know Not Why God's Wondrous Grace
I like it's folk-like tune and the words for inspiring worship
Charlotte Elliott (1789-1871) Just As I Am
I know two tunes - both are good.
James Edmeston (1791-1867) Lead Us Heavenly Father Lead Us
Hard to say why I like it except it is good for training the singer to take long breaths without unmusical breaks.
Charles Wesley: Love Divine All Loves Excelling
I like the bass line and the words are very inspiring
Samuel Crossman (1624-84) My Song Is Love Unknown
I sense the humility of the person who wrote it. Humility is something I struggle with
Martin Rinkart (1586-1649) Now Thank We All Our God
I like to be reminded to thank God. The chant-like tune is striking and there are lots of verses
John M Neale (1818-66) (translator) O Come, O Come Immanuel And Ransom Captive Israel
Like it because it is very good for training the voice not to make unmusical breaks. It needs a lot of puff.
Charles Wesley: O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing
Life affirming.
J.S. Bach: O Sacred Head Surrounded (chorale from Matthew Passion)
Bach is one of my favourite composers and this piece is a very moving chorale from his Matthew Passion. It is sung by the choir, not soloist and I like choral music. I give the English and the German text for it at the end.

Focus on God, rousing hymn. Good to sing in cold weather when it's raining.
Matthias Claudius (1740-1815) We Plough The Fields
I like the words and the tune. I like hymns that harmonize well. This is one of them.
Joseph M. Scriven (1819-86) What A Friend We Have In Jesus
I like it and hard to say why.
Isaac Watts (1674-1748) when I Survey The Wondrous Cross
Very moving hymn. It makes me grateful for what God has done for me.
J.W. van de Venter (1855-1939) All To Jesus I Surrender
I like the rhythm and the tune. The words are very tough - surrendering is the most difficult thing for me.

hey guys, i went to see third day in concert on saturday. oh goodness, it was the best! there were several other great bands there such as starfield, thousand foot krutch as well as a newer one called revive. it rocked! gosh, why didn't god bless me with a great singing voice? oh well, he says to make a joyful noise and that i can do. ha!
i just wanted to mention the station on the web i shared before also has links for praise music if you are not into rock and hard rock music like i am. it also has hiphop too. the best part is that it is all for the glory of jesus! i have to say i am hooked on the rock link, i listen all day at work. if you'd like the link again, just pm me.

I'll probably get shot for this one - but please take it as a comment to use caution and discretion.
I used to be a huge rock and hard rock fan. Constant. My favorite band was the Rolling Stones if that tells you anything.
God convicted me greatly of listening to this type of music as it stirred and inspired the types of sins that I so desparately wanted to overcome. Weeding out one CD after another, I eventually was rid of all of it. Now I truly hate this kind of music and really can't stand to hear it at all. It is of a very evil source.
Well here it goes: one of the reasons I began to rid the house of this stuff (eight or so years ago) was because of a trip my wife and I took to New Orleans, Memphis, and Nashville. Part of it was educational about the sources of music - we are retired and actually had time to get into this. We had already begun to be convicted of our liffestyles, so what we found was really just reinforcement to continue ridding ourselves of this garbage.
Anyway, rock-n-roll beats - the drum beats - actually come from Voodoo. The drums used in that fashion were used to whip up a sexual frenzy at voodoo meetings in the outskirts of old New Orleans where as many as 500 would congregate. It was brought here by witchdoctors and followers of Voodoo from Haiti and originated in Dahomey. At the Voodoo Temple, they explain how the spirit of the serpent operates in the vibrations of the drums to cause a sexual fluxing in the soul's interiors. They actually say this in the open! At the Mardi Gras museum these themes are reinforced in their explanations of the sources and traditions of the Mardi Gras and the New Orleans Mardi Gras culture. In Memphis at the Rock and Soul musuem, the influence of the Voodoo drumming to the rock beat is further explored and explained how this vein of beat became the basis for merging other types of music into what became rock and roll.
The voodoo beats in rock and roll excite the sexual nature in a person. If you are trying to overcome intense sexual impulses, you may want to limit your exposure to the driving beats in rock music.
There is a real reason why one of the 90's Rolling Stones tours was aptly named "Voodoo Lounge." It isn't just the words - there is something much more sinister to rock and roll than one would perceive simply by looking at the performer. Now I realize there are many who are not aware of this and like rock and roll. And there are probably "lighter" tunes and beats that are not quite so intense to the system. God has to lead each person and I'm not telling you what to do.
For me, nixing the rock and roll entirely has probably contributed something significant to my enduring freedom. The stuff isn't there to stir me up.

i have no doubt that music in any form can be used to lift people up into a worship experience or be used to drag people down into entertaining sinful thoughts. i fully believe that the underlying message is the key to preventing yourself from being exposed to music that could damage your spiritual walk, not particular instruments. the origins of drumbeats may be for sinister purposes, but when it is used to glorify god, then it is taking something back from the evil one.
personally, i totally get your meaning tho. i too loved some pretty horrible bands in my youth. i started to name several here, but thought better of it. anyway, i rid myself of that kind of music. it has a way of penetrating your soul and putting terrible thoughts into your head. for me, i can only listen to christian music. period. i have worked with youth for many years and i can honestly say that you can tell the difference in a young person's life if they only listen to christian music and one that listens to any and everything. it really affects their attitude and seeps out in their behavior.
thanks again for sharing that. no, i have no desire to shoot you for it, i think you are wise to warn us to use caution. i completely agree with that.
