Is there a link, for some, between addiction and Music. To answer this question from my perspective I need to give some brief background. I was born in the sixties and was a teenager in the seventies. I saw an explosion in the Music Industry (both home grown and worldwide) in this decade with the creation of some really big bands e.g. Little River Band, ACDC, America, ELO, Wings, The Who, Blondie, Fleetwood Mac, ABBA etc. Back then it was a really good genre and Bands had to work hard and play well to get to the top. There was not a big emphasis on Aesthetic Music Videos and Enhanced vocalisation. I do remember that a lot of lyrics could be suggestive but generally the Bands behaved.

Stev,
I think today's accepted music is nothing less than a reflection of our fallen culture. I have been a big part of that fallen culture, not so much with the music but with smut, porn, etc. I remember back when I was first tempted, smut and porn were not that easy to find. Then the video stores started popping up and XXX rated movies were just a few bucks and a drive to the rental store away. Smut mags also became much more prevalent. Then, when the Internet came about, talk about a sinner's delight! It is much the same with Music. There was a time as you said when groups had to really work to make a name and sell their music. Back then, to do so, the music had to be socially acceptable or the stores would carry the records and the radio stations wouldn't play the music. Today, with the Internet, Youtube, and I'm sure many other things I am not aware of, any group can peddle anything they want and have a growing audience.
I wish I had answers, but I do not. I was caught up in it with the porn/smut explosion. For me, turning to God has been my only salvation, but I have no idea how to get everyone else to do so.

Thanks B.O.M for your reply. I agree with you about the internet. Now we can go on Youtube and watch anything we want, past or present. When I was younger the only way you got to see artists was to buy their LPs or Cassettes and commit to paying the money to attend their concerts. Back then their was no internet so you either went to the concert and talked about it at school the day after or completely missed out.

Steve64, You keep coming up with good questions - you must be thinking about this stuff regularly. I am not an expert but I've heard enough discussion and some sermons that I agree that music can have good and bad effects. Lyrics are more obvious so I'll pass on commenting to much on this other than to say stick to Christian music and more towards the main stream stuff (there is some questionable stuff on the fringes). However, the rhythm, melody, beat, etc. can and has been studied and proven to influence people for good and bad. Classic rock beats have a rhythm that does something negatively to our souls. Traditional Hymns quite the opposite affect - more calming and introspective. I am of the more modern Christian music persuasion but I have to always make sure the lyrics are biblical, and the music calms me more than gets me worked up (mostly in bad ways). I listen to a lot of Michael Card and Fernando Ortega type music.
I really don't like MTV or any equivalent even if it is purportedly Christian. What Billy Graham has put out recently, like in My Hope America, is as close as I come. We recovering men need to keep an arms distance from anything that can tempt or corrupt us. Some day when we meet Jesus I don't think any conversation will come up about the benefits of MTV or any type of music that doesn't praise Him or the Father. Any amount of what we have watched won't tip the scales in our favor unless it glorifies God. Hope this helps and they are just my thoughts as I am certainly no music expert. Blessings, Nikanor

Yes Nikanor I totally agree with what you're saying here. And as older (hopefully more mature Christians - LOL) we need to ensure that we are not setting ourselves up as a bad example to those new to the faith and/or developing their maturity in Christ.

I was born in the early 70s and I grew up with songs in the 80s that I really love. I'm a musician and have played the piano for 30 years. I love just about any genre of music. However, I'm careful not to listen to music that glorifies sin.
Take a look a the songs Madonna did. I won't listen to her at all.
But, I love songs from Journey.

We go to an SBC and they are pretty lax about this issue. They play both contemporary Christian music and traditional hymns.
I know this is a hot button issue amongst Christiandom. I won't listen to anything that makes me feel uncomfortable. I do remember when MTV became popular when I was in Jr.High School. My dad actually took me to Motley Crew Concert after I graduated high school at Alpine Valley in WI. Now, I wouldn't attend one of their concerts b/c of their content and their language.
I was involved with legalistic churches and they preached against the "Devil's Music" a lot. I allow my children more freedom with music. I want them to think for themselves. My husband and my daughter went to a concert in DC and although we didn't agree with some of her songs, we allowed her to go. She just turned 18, and I don't want her just to be a clone of me or my H.
Again, I still say, if the Spirit is convicting you, that's a good sign. I'm sitting here blasting 70 and 80s songs while the kiddos are at church. I love light rock music. Although, I'm a classically trained pianist and I still love classical music.
I am going to try to get back to teaching piano this fall. I really miss it.

What is so disturbing is that the kids who hear this stuff now and see the videos have it practically forced on them. Secular radio does not have more than 2percent of their songs about love, They are blatantly about sex, wanting sex
or cheating. Nothing more.We listen to 90% Christian music but my preteen daughter will once in awhile change it to secular and she is so innocent that she'll be singing along and Ill have to say," do you know what that phrase means? they are singing about sex. Its sweet that you don't know that but lets change the channel back".
And the dancing in music videos anymore is nothing more than widely watched lap dances. Remember when you had to have talent to become famous? Or when you had to be atleast be fairly moral to be accepted to a record company, have a tv show or be played on the radio? definitely the enemy is busy these days. The key is too have so much light and good music in the home that it just feels foreign when the junk comes on.

I think that's good advice BnB. Just look at the stuff Disney shows on their teen shows. We were watching one and they had teens in bikinis sitting in the hot tub together. Children are also highly sexualized in public schools. Need I remind anyone what Bill Clinton put this country through in the 90s?? I heard reports that Jr. High school were replicating his actions b/c the most powerful man on earth said it was not "sex." I love to turn on Pandora in the morning and listen to Anthony Burger, God rest his soul who used to play with the Gaithers. Here is him playing The Halleluia Chorus from The Messiah on the piano. It just gives me the chills. www.youtube.com/watch?v=jg-VJd3-4EA

Burger fell when he was a toddler and burned his hand on a hot floor vent. His hands were so burned, they dr. said he would never play the piano again.
He ended up proving them wrong by becoming a child prodigy and playing with the Gaithers until he had a heart attack at the age of 45.
