I have been thinking for a long time about starting a thread on Love and Forgiveness but I have been putting it off. Why? Because I am lazy first and foremost. Secondly, Satan has been working double time on me lately...how many times do I have to hit myself upside the head with a cast iron skillet before I remember that only in God will I find rest, peace, joy, love, forgiveness and mercy? Where do we go to know God? Prayer and Scripture. So I am getting this thread started. I pray and hope you will all join me in this endevor and that we will all be blessed and learn from it.

Luke 7 44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”
48 Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”
I thought this scripture was appropriate since it deals with both love and Forgiveness. To me this tells me to take heart, because my sins are numerous and great, I have more reason to love Christ for saving me, forgiving me. With my imperfect love He is able to take my heart and mold it to make it a fitting vessel to house His perfect love which I am then able to feel, use and give to myself and others.

My love for God should be gigantic the way I'm sinning and being forgiven!
I like the scripture in 1 John 4:18
There is no fear in love. Perfect love casts out fear because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears cannot be made perfect in love.
God spoke this scripture to me over and over and has always been quite perplexing for me. I believe what he is saying is that I'm His child, His son. I'm not an object of His wrath. He loves me even when I sin. His love gives me comfort when I'm afraid. I can come to Him without constantly fearing punishment.

What really strikes me about this is how forgiveness, love, fear, trust and faith are interwoven. We must have faith the Christ is our saviour and then trust in His love to forgive us. Next comes trusting in His love to be unconditional so that we do not fear of His judgement when we mess up. Also notice how the love is all His love and not our human imperfect love.

Thought we ought to have a definition of love from the source of all love. Remember to not only apply this to others but to yourself as well.
1 Cor 13 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Many people are familiar with 1 Corinthians 13. It is the verses most often quoted at weddings. However Paul wanted us to not only understand what LOVE is but why it is so important. Here is the first part of that famous passage of Scriptures 1 Corinthians 13 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. ...

Now about FORGIVENESS: Luke 17:4New International Version (NIV)
4 Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.”
This Scripture was always one of my favorite on "forgiveness" but also one that I had the hardest time with. Jesus says that if my brother commits a sin seven times in a row on the same day or seven different sins on the same day and each time comes to me and says "I repent" I MUST forgive him. Now my flesh is saying, "NO WAY LORD." Seven times he committed this sin; surely he isn't willing to repent after that many times, so why forgive him. The Lord says, "I will deal with his heart as I will deal with yours also. Forgive your brother and free yourself from judging him and condemning him for his sin." I had to think long and hard about that. I didn't want to - but I had to do it Jesus' WAY. That's what I surrendered to. So I'm still in the learning process on this Scripture and hopefully one day it will become a part of my character. Until then I need to practice this verse everyday.

Notice that when we accept Christ, the Holy Spirit pours God's love into our hearts. I want more of His love in my heart and less of my imperfect human love. Romans 5 (NIV) Peace and Hope 5 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we[c] also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

Colossians 3:12-14English Standard Version (ESV)
12 Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
What we tend to forget is that forgiveness is not for the other person unless they repent to you but it is mainly for you. It isn't healthy to hang on to unforgiveness. It messes with you emotionally, spiritually, physically and in all your relationships.

1 John 4:18 (ESV)
18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
This one I struggle with even today. How often I feel led to do something and yet fear holds me back.

Ephesians 4:31-32 (ESV)
31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
It is so hard to not let past hurts turn into bitterness. I am having that issue with my past. My dad was an alcoholic and now I am living with another alcoholic. I am comparing my brother to my dad. And the past feelings have surfaced. Got to work on this.

John 8 34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
Matt 18 12 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? 13 And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. 14 So it is not the will of my[e] Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.

Joshua 1:9 (ESV)
9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Now that is love and forgiveness God style. Think about...He is with us always. He is there when we sin. He doesn't turn away. Love and forgiveness in this gem.

Luke 11:11 "What father among you, if his son asks for bread, would give him a stone, or if he asks for a fish, would give him a snake instead of the fish?
12 Or if he asks for an egg, would he give him a scorpion?
13 So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who keep asking him!”
Man that is love right there.
