My self-study on Satan, demons

“Whoever practices sin is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was revealed, that He might destroy the works of the devil.“

Jesus Christ was revealed to destroy the works of the devil

“and they may escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.“ 2 Timothy 2:26 MEV

May you and I escape the will of Satan, and never do Satan’s will

“Those along the path are those who hear. Then comes the devil, who takes away the word from their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.“ Luke 8:12 MEV

Satan wants to take the Word of God (The Holy Bible) away from your heart and my heart and your family and your friends and your enemies hearts. Why? Because you would hear and believe and be saved. Saved from God’s Wrath, saved from a sinful, selfish, self-centered lifestyle, saved from a self/me-first/kind of way of living. The reason why our world and our characters and our thinking is so messed up.

“You son of the devil, enemy of all righteousness, full of deceit and of all fraud, will you not cease perverting the right ways of the Lord?” Acts 13:10 MEV

The children of the devil are enemies, full of deceit, all fraud, perverting the right ways of the Lord

“Moreover he must have a good reputation among those who are outsiders, so that he does not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.” 1 Timothy 3:7 MEV

The devil’s plan is for us to ‘fall into reproach and the snare of the devil’

“how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.” Acts 10:38 MEV

Jesus Christ is the One who is able to heal all who were and still are and will be oppressed by the devil. God is with Jesus and Jesus is God. That’s why.

So then, as the children share in flesh and blood, He likewise took part in these, so that through death He might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, Hebrews 2:14 MEV

Jesus Christ, became a human, and through Jesus Christs death, Jesus Christ destroys the devil who has the power of death.

In this the children of God and the children of the devil are revealed: Whoever does not live in righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother. 1 John 3:10 MEV

The ones who do not live in righteousness are not of God. The ones who does not love his brother are not of God.

You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies. John 8:44 MEV

Jesus tells some people, they’re father is not God, but the devil. Jesus told them that they want to do the desires of the Devil. Jesus said that devil was a murderer from the beginning and the devil doesn’t stand in the truth, because there is not truth in him. When the Devil lies, he speaks from his own nature, because the devil is a liar and the father of lies.

Let’s examine the casting out of demons (exorcisms) done by Jesus Christ and see what we can learn from them.

‘They sailed to the country of the Gadarenes, which is across from Galilee. When He stepped out on land, a man from the city who had demons for a long time met Him. He wore no clothes, nor did he live in a house but in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before Him, and with a loud voice said, “What have You to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I plead with You, do not torment me.” For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. It often had seized him, and he was kept under guard, bound with chains and shackles. But he broke the shackles and was driven by the demon into the wilderness. Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He said, “Legion,” because many demons had entered him. And they begged Him not to command them to go out into the abyss. There was a large herd of swine feeding on the mountain. They begged Him to permit them to enter them, and He permitted them. Then the demons went out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd ran violently down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. When those who fed them saw what had happened, they fled and reported it in the city and in the country. Then they went out to see what had happened, and came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had departed sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind. And they were afraid. Those who had seen it told them how he who had been possessed by demons was healed. Then the whole crowd from the surrounding country of the Gadarenes asked Him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So He went into the boat and returned. Now the man from whom the demons had departed asked Him if he could stay with Him. But Jesus sent him away, saying, “Return to your own house, and tell what great things God has done for you.” So he went his way and proclaimed throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him.’ Luke 8:26-39

Let’s look at another case

‘The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a great crowd met Him. Suddenly a man cried out from the crowd, saying, “Teacher, I beg You, look upon my son, for he is my only child. A spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out. It convulses him until he foams at the mouth, and bruises him, and scarcely leaves him. I begged Your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.” Jesus said, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.” While he was coming, the demon threw him down and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and returned him to his father. And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while everyone marveled at all the things Jesus did, He said to His disciples, ‘ Luke 9:37-43

Let’s look at Jesus’ disciples who received power from God to cast out demons in Jesus’ name.

‘The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us through Your name.” He said to them, “I saw Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Look, I give you authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy. And nothing shall by any means hurt you. Nevertheless do not rejoice that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”’ Luke 10:17-20

Therefore we wished to come to you—even I, Paul, once and again—but Satan hindered us. 1 Thessalonians 2:18 MEV

Satan hinders Christians

For some have already turned aside after Satan. 1 Timothy 5:15 MEV

People have already turned aside after Satan

For the word of God is alive, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 MEV

The Bible is our weapon, sharper than a two-edged sword, it pierces even to the division of soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intents of the heart

‘On the same day certain Pharisees came, saying to Him, “Get out and depart from here, for Herod wants to kill You.” He said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Look, I cast out demons. And I perform healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I shall be perfected.’ Nevertheless I must travel today and tomorrow and the day following. For it cannot be that a prophet should perish outside Jerusalem. “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing! Look, your house is forsaken. Truly I say to you, you shall not see Me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.’ ”’ Luke 13:31-35

Our only hope is Jesus Christ. Jesus said “I cast out demons”. Jesus’ followers are given authority and power because it was given to them by God and they (disciples) cast out demons in Jesus’s name.
