I was reading a post about a husband who wants to recovery on this own. It followed another reply with a member saying that some are able to recovery on their own but it was rare. I would like to say that if all good things (like recovery) are from God, the God of the Bible, then even if God gives us years of sexual sobreity and freedom over lust, it's not really alone, despite you didn't contact pastors, brothers, or have some outside "help". It would still count as God helping you and therefore, not being recovered alone.
The other person who mentioned that it was rare to recover alone, also said that he found these kinds of people "self-righteous, argumentative" also and that "I don't want anything from that person".
Granted, if someone who is considered "recovered" sounds as if they are doing it "on their own" and try to take credit not giving Jesus the credit, I would say the same, because it's that kind of stuff I heard in different places. On the other hand, if someone is walking with Jesus and it seems like "they are recovering on their own" (how can you determine that? I dont' know) and this person shares about the Lord, and defend the gospel, denoucing false gospels, false Messiahs, and pointing only to Jesus for recovery, and someone else (like 12 step secular groups and that kind of mentality) say something like "Oh man, that recoverying sex addict preaches only Jesus as the true God, and says our HP (higher powers) are not real, do not exists, so I hate that and "I don't want nothing with that" - if someone sounds kind of like that, I know that person doesn't have a problem with the one they are talking bad about, but they have a problem with Jesus Christ. Granted, as followers of Jesus Christ, we do mess up, maybe sound "self-righteous" to the outside world (I know I was accused of this), but to tell others the simple gospel of Jesus Christ, loving them, dying for them, then getting persecuted for being "narrow-minded" and "not following the SA program because this is not a religion but a spiritual program", that I have a problem with.
I will always have a program with secular programs who deny the Lord Jesus Christ.
Let's say you are a hindu or buddhists and say "I'm grateful to my HP for 20 years of sobriety, I have learned through working the steps, finding a sponsor and attending meetings that (some inspirational quotes inserted here) and thanks for letting me share" and when someone comes in to share about Jesus, it's the hindu or buddhists (another religious person) who fights you, calls you 'narrow minded' and 'how dare you come here to try to preach your religion to those hurting and suffering who are finding help throught their own higher power"
There will be a lot of people "good" people are thought they did life right according to their rules and higher power, but never even knew the Lord Jesus Christ, and we are taught to warn them, tell them, despite the persecutions, why? for us to look good, seem 'self-righteous' no no no, but to give them a chance to meet the One True God who actually can grant them eternal life, make them new, and fill them with the Holy Spirit to live in real sobreity, not only overcoming sexual addictions, but all other ones we all commonly struggle with. It's God's plan - the descipleship plan / recovery plan.
'Then Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, βAll authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.β Amen.'

'Although if we or an angel from heaven preach any other gospel to you than the one we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so I say now again: If anyone preaches any other gospel to you than the one you have received, let him be accursed.'
Galatians 1:8-9

'For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly desires, we should live soberly, righteously, and in godliness in this present world, as we await the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all lawlessness and purify for Himself a special people, zealous of good works. Teach these things, exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you.'
