I was reading Matthew 19 to study the man who loved his sin more than Jesus and I wanted to share my thoughts on this. God bless you with repentance and faith in His Son Jesus Christ.

What is Salvation? Eternal life? To be Saved?

Matthew 19:16-30 KJV — And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions. Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved? But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible. Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore? And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life. But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.
What is the question asked of a man?
What good thing shall I do to have eternal life.
What happens next?
JESUS says that only God is good and that he must keep the commandments.
What happens next?
The man asks which COMMANDMENTS.
What commands did Jesus give the man?
Do not kill
Do not commit adultery
Do not steal
Do not bear false witness
Honor your father and mother
You shall love your neighbor as yourself
How does the man reply?
I have kept these from my youth. What do I still lack?
JESUS says a specific command to him. What is it?
If you want to be perfect, go sell your possessions, give to the poor, then you will have treasures in heaven, come and follow Me.
How does the young man respond?
He went away sorrowful
Why does he go away sorrowful?
Because he had many possessions.
What does Jesus say about this rich man?
It's easier for a camel to go through an eye of a needle then for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven.
What was the disciples’ response?
Amazed
Why were they amazed?
They said “Who can be saved?”
How did Jesus respond and comfort them?
JESUS tells them that with men this is impossible but with God all things are possible.
What can we learn from this story?
Salvation is from God and impossible with men. That a person's love for money shows itself when they are unwilling to go sell it all and give to the poor. That God alone is good and perfect. The 10 commandments reveal our sinful desires.
What can we learn about Jesus?
JESUS offers salvation to people if they repent and believe. If they are willing and forsake sin (breaking of God’s commands) and show the evidence by actually cut it off, come to Jesus and follow.(love Christ will first, trust Christ, obey Christ because sin is breaking God’s commands and obedience means to do the commands)
“With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
It is not a work of your own efforts if you are willing to forsake sins because “with God all things are impossible" and if you do actually forsake sins which is “impossible with men" then you are actually showing that God is enabling you to do the good work of forsaking sins. Therefore someone who follows Jesus can do “all things through Christ who strengthens me"
The claim that some argue that “repentance is a work" or “submitting to the Lordship of Jesus Christ is works based salvation” is nullified because now we know that if a person “sells his possessions" and “gives to the poor" is impossible with man and that if a person could do this then it shows that God is at work inside and “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength”
The man in Matthew 19 should have heard the Law of God is seen how he is not keeping it instead of self-deceiving himself into thinking that he was keeping it. This is dillusion. The self-dillution is made aware when the rich man said “I have kept these what still do I lack?” If he really did honestly say truthfully then why did he still say that he still lacks something. He shows that he was blinded to the fact that he was not loving his neighbor because when Jesus tells him to sell his possessions and give they money to the poor the man’s response is sorrowful and shows that he did not love his neighbor, but only thought he did. The Holy Spirit was wrestling with the heart of a sinner but the sinner chose to not admit his wrong, consequently, he chose to stay in his lack of eternal life for the abundant possessions he owned.
His mind was sad that for him to get eternal life that he would have to let go of his possessions, give it to the poor, and come and follow Jesus. He was not willing. He did not see Jesus as worth it but only a good teacher and not willing to surrender to Jesus.
JESUS says, “Where your treasure is, is where your heart is"
This man's heart was in his own understanding. His own world. His own rule. His own abilities. His own goodness. He was not going to believe in Jesus. Consequently, he was not going to obey Jesus. Sadly, he left Jesus for his possessions.
