For those of you who are receiving or have received counseling, how did you choose your counselor? I was going to go through my churches lay counseling program, but I thought this would be over their heads and I decided I didn't want to go to the church for counseling on my own. It's a big church, but stuff gets around.

I asked a woman in our church whom I knew was a prayer warrior. She led me to a therapist in the area whom I speak with monthly now. We also asked our pastor, who recommended someone outside of the church as well. I might contact the person my pastor recommended because she is older and has more experience in counseling than my current therapist. Not that my current one is bad, she has given me a lot of tools to work with. Hope you find one who fits your needs.

The first step in finding a counselor is asking yourself what you want to achieve and how you want to achieve it. Once you know those things finding a counselor that will come along side you to help will be much easier. You must remember that you are employing them for a purpose so defining your main purpose and how you want to work at achieving it will help you choose a good counselor.
