No the images never completely go away. They are locked into your mind when you see them. They can be recalled at will. What is different about it is how we handle those images through our faith in Christ. We have to choose every day to renew our minds...wash it if you will...in Christ's teachings...the bible, prayer, etc. By doing so we can keep those images from taking over our lives. We have to be diligent in not only our choices but what we view and hear because those can trigger the old images and urges. Then we find ourselves back in the thick of the addictive nature we have. Staying on top or in control of our minds, our choices, and staying in Christ is the key to overcoming.

I once heard of a story given by Dr. Mark Lasser, the author of Faithful and True, previously called The Secret Sin.
A man decided to take Jesus' words literally when He said, "If your eye offends thee, pluck it out and cast it from thee."
The man literally plucked both of his eyes out to keep himself from using P.
However, he later discovered that he could still access the images already engraved in his mind from his P use.
For me, recovering from this addiction means keeping custody of my mind and thoughts as well as my eyes. That has to been done via God's grace.

My dad was shacked up with a women who had three boys and at age 11, her son showed me a porn mag that was my dad's. I can remember that image.
And the link I clicked on when I discovered (also called D-day) his porn use will be burn in my mind forever. It was a video. I will never remember the shock. Who the hell did I marry? That's what was going through my mind.

I thought about having becoming a eunuch so I would not have shameful thoughts, however I went to my first SA meeting and I thought bad thoughts would go away with age, they don't we need to keep our minds clean. I've been listening to to soft rock on pandora. Good music keeps me in a good mood and keeps my mind off of bad images. I enjoy Cat stevens, Johnny Cash, John Cougar, Simon and Garfunkel I don't have much choice for music because I am partially deaf. I need music with strong voices without too much background noise. I was listening to gospel music in the past,I hope I am not trading one bad habit for another. I am fortunate to have a beautiful wife that I love. I need to show her I love her by repenting as well as the good Lord. I got a new cell phone and my wife is going to put covenant eyes on it. Covent Eyes is a great program because I feel like my wife or my mom is watching over my shoulder. I am careful of what I type in to my computer.

Those images may always be there, but we can make a conscious choice not to dwell on them. It's possible to retrain your brain so you think of them less and less... Like amymine712 said, we can handle them with Christ's help:
