I can tell you about past horror stories and the imperfection of some churches, but I am choosing what G-d wants for my life, and that is to focus on my positives and not so much the past and forgive. Living in faithfulness , thankfulness, and not in bitterness. I feel that G-d takes pleasure in that.
1 Thessalonians 5:21 21 But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; 22 abstain from every form of evil.
I find that instead of Christians looking at the church downfall, we should focus on what they do try to do. I believe Churches mean well and, although not always fully equipt to handle it all, they do the best that they can. We need to also accept responsibility for our own actions and not act as the church needs to save us. It is a personal relationship with Christ that saves.

I used to be very angry against the church. After some time, God patiently nudged me to reconcile that lost relationship and now, I'm not so bitter. Although it took some time, God was showing me that my attitude was self-inflicting. As long as I held bitterness toward the church, I was choosing to do my spiritual walk alone. And there really isn't such a thing as a "Lone Ranger Christian". God allowed me to drop so many unrealistic expectation from my church, to accept people as fallible, and take a more responsible approach. Putting a spin on John F. Kennedy's words,
"Don't ask what God can do for you, but rather ask what you can do for God?"
"Don't ask what your church can do for you, but rather ask what you can do for your church."
Who is the church? We are. And we can choose to either be part of a problem or part of a solution. Of course, that doesn't mean be part of an unhealthy church. There are some bad apples out there. But wiltingiris has a point. That is one can probably note that most of the churches out there have more good attributes than bad ones. And we shouldn't judge all churches based on a few bad experiences.

I love my church, too. DH and I plan to stay in the area almost solely because of our church. We have great amounts of help from the people there both for our marriage and individually. Almost everyday this week I have visited with someone from my church

I I choose to stand by the victims of clergy rape and abuse. We just had another pastor in our area who had raped two girls in TX years ago and came here and built a multi million dollar cash cow of a church that had a BIG inner city bus ministry. He also admitted in court that molested kids here and had several adulterous affairs.
I can't imagine the damage that has been done in the cause of Christ to the precious children under his "ministry." The church better wake up and deal with the sin and corruption or I believe more and more Christian homes are going to break up. We can no longer be silent.
I think Jesus would do that myself. He said that people who hurt children should have a millstone around their necks.
I have am close to a group of women who are trying to get this so called "Christian group home" for so called rebellious girls b/c the pastor was physcially and verbally abusive to all of us. It's called Hephzibah House in IN. They are thes strongest women I have ever met. And they are not bitter, they are victorious in Christ.
I would never presume to tell someone on here or anywhere else to just get over the past.
Each and every one of us either on here or in the world have thier OWN time in which they need to heal.
That is the purpose of this site. We are allowed to delve into our past and deal with the hurts esp. the hurts our spouses have done to us. I have had flashbacks and had to deal with memories in my marriage over and over again. I've also been told over and over again that if PAs (most of them have been sexually abused) don't delved into their past and find out WHY they are sex addicts, they will never get better.
So me....I think it's healthy to look into the past and work things out. I would never tell another believer to get over their past and stop being bitter. That's a pat answer. We should weep with those who weep and rejoice with those who rejoice.

Oh, and get this! The "pastor" (he went by Pastor G) is begging for money now that he's been fired and doesn't have his 115,000 a year salary and his 700,000 house to help with his legal bills! This guy lived like a king.
He's got I think seven felony counts and there are many teens who have come forward to say he sexually abused them in TX and VA. Also, many women have come forward to say they committed adultery with him. His mentor, Jack Scaap is in prison in IL for taking a 16 yo across state lines and molesting her. And his mentor was his FIL (Jack Hyles)who was exposed by his daughter as having a longtime adulterous affair with his secretary. He was wealthy too and financially supported his secretary to the point that he wanted her to divorce her husband even though they had children, but the H refused. Just to back track, Jack Hyles started 1st Baptist Church in Hammond, IN which was famous for being the largest Baptist Church in the world or the biggest mega church in the country in the 80s. He also started the Hyles Anderson Bible College so he was very wealthy. His own son (David Hyles) was also outed as having several adulterous affairs and was implicated in the murder of a toddler. You can find their stories on the website I posted on my church thread. So, one man, Jack Hyles went unchecked and went on to spread his sin to other men.
Also, Bob Jones, the famous Christian College in SC has been exposed as covering up sexual abuse for 70 years. Many students and alumni have come forward and said they told their professors or many in the administration there that they were either sexually abused by their own pastor father or in their church and the school purposely didn't tell the authorities even tho they are a mandatory reporter by LAW. They just told them to forgive and forget. Many of these abusers came right out of their college and they wanted their college name protected instead of the victims.
I could go on and on, but these precious souls are need to hear our support b/c many of them get shunned by the church and the people they grew up in and even their families. They surround the perp and shun the victim.
I've even had my own SIL and BIL whom we were close to turn their backs on my H and I (and we did a lot for them financially like give their oldest over 2 grand for college) b/c I exposed sin in the IFB circles and questioned many of their unbiblical beliefs. My SIL told me on the phone that I wasn't saved LOL!
Wilting Iris is dead on, it's about a personal relationship with Christ. I JUST read this in my OYB (One Year Bible) this morning and it dove tails with what WI said, Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the Scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
We are still looking for a church that will meet our needs and has a good youth group. The church that we are attending for Celebrate Recovery is OK, but the youth group is set up weird. And we want one where my 15 and 13 yo can attend the same youth group. The CR church runs their YG as grade 9-12 instead of 6-12 which is want we need so that they can attend the same group.

"I wonder though how this relates with these Carnal Christians, if they ever were Christians in the first place (I have my doubts). Do not be dismayed Sister, whether they go to Hell or arrive on the Beama Seat in Heaven, God will not forget the wrong they have committed"
Revelation 3 describes what I believe as the Dispensation-list or the End Times Church. I don't know if we are in the ET, but the immorality that Jesus predicted is happening quickly and on a worldwide scale. We are just to watch and pray.
14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;
15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
22 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
To me, that describes what we are witnessing here in America. If 50% of the pastors are watching porn, that closely fits Rev. 3. Like Stev said, are they even saved? I'm not questioning anyone and their salvation here at all, but the evil I witnessed in our denomination on a grand scale makes me wonder about their salvation esp. if they hurt children or cover it up.

We see a lot of violence here too in America esp. in "gun free zones." Just the other day, five Marines were killed in such a zone. I have a pic on my FB that shows 29 bullet holes around the sign saying, "Federal Law prohibits guns in this gun free zone." I think it was on a base or a recruiting office.
And look a the school shootings here, all in gun free zones.
However, it's murder in the HEART that causes these killings. We removed God in our schools ins the early 60s and in that decade, we saw violence skyrocket. We took the 10 commandments off our public places so "thou shalt not kill" is no longer taught and that's why I homeschool. Well, not ONLY that reason, but it's a big part of it.
The Columbine School Shooting was in the late 90s and those two were on antidepressants. Why? I think it's because today's youth has no real hope b/c our nation has turned it's back on God. "The wicked shall be turned into Hell and all nations that turn their backs on God."
Like you said, unbelievers or new believers are reluctant to go to church b/c it seems as if it turns a blind eye to the sin in it's buildings. I'm not singling out one denomination in particular b/c Public Schools are the most violent places. Over 10% of PS students here in America are sexually harassed or assaulted by their teachers or fellow students.
I wonder what the porn issue has to do with this? I'm not saying that ALL porn users b/c predators, I mean their MUST be a correlation with rape and porn. Just look at Bundy like you said. His interview with James Dobson before he was put to death was to warn America about porn. He grew up in a normal home until he and his friends found porn in the trash. He said the more violent his porn usage was, the more violent he became and in his world, "it seemed as if I was under an otherworldly influence" which I think is Demon Possession.
There was a guy in WI that did the same things only to boys. His name was Jeffrey Daumer and he was killed in a prison about a half an hour from our house in that state. I heard he received Christ as his Savior too.
I think the stats are: 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men are raped/molested w/i one mile of their homes. Both my husband and my mom were molested by family members by age 6. There is no longer the death penalty for rapists. They are released back into society to do it again. I have 2 pedophiles in my neighborhood and It took me a LONG time to let my kids go for a walk by themselves. The first time I let all three go around the 'hood by themselves, a man followed them home and knocked on my door. We called the police b/c he broke into the vacant home across the street and slept there. He was casing homes to break in to.
I pity the fool who tries THAT in my home. They'll get a body full of lead. I didn't hesitate to take a pot shot at the pit bull that was constantly getting out and attacking my family and I won't hesitate to protect me and mine should they try a home invasion. My kids even know how to use a firearm.
Revelation describes the end times church to a T. And if there isn't worldwide revival, it will continue to get worse. I read the other day, that the biggest Baptist University is now removing homosexual acts as immoral sexual behavior and they will NOT expel students who get involved in it.
But, I digress.....
