In the past two to three weeks I've noticed that my husband has really poor impulse control. On several occasions he has reminded me of my son when he was three years old. This morning, as he was asking me what was in the box that he just picked up, spun on his fingers and dropped, I was answering that there were glass hummingbirds in the box. WHAT IN HEAVENS NAME would make a grown man spin and drop a box that he has no idea what it contains? I could care less about the humming birds. I'm really concerned that this is a symptom of declining or regressing mental function. I've previously described my husband as a 12 year old stuck in a mans body. I now think there are parts of him that are about three.
I spent the best 23 years of my life trying to live up to his standards, endured his sneers, and now I find myself married to a 50 year old, unemployed, alcoholic and sex addict who seems to have the impulse control of a three year old. I'm dumbfounded.
I question if this lack of impulse control has existed all along and I just never saw it before, or whether this is, as I suspect, a new symptom, a regression, a step on the path to premature dementia. I'd appreciate thoughts on this issue.
My best, DW

DW, I don't have insight into this question, but it's obviously am interesting one. Spending some time (as I just have) Googling "addiction, impulse control" and following links might be time well spent. I won't try to summarize what I learned, since it's all fresh and rather a jumble right now. One interesting site I happened on in this search was alcoholrehab.com/alcohol-rehab/ . It's hosted by a commercial site running a string of rehabs in Asia, but the links down the right-hand side of the page (once you get below the stuff about DARA itself) look like they're quite an education at an elementary level in everything about addiction. There are links on everything from Lack of Willpower to Addiction as a Mental Illness to Alcohol Abuse in Scotland to Arrogance in Recovery. It looks like there's a lot to learn there, at least for folks on my side of the fence. Tim M.

Thank you, Tim. That looks like a great resource. I will continue to google. There seems to be quite a connection between addiction and impulse control/delayed gratification.
I just don't know if I am seeing clearly for the first time or if these are new symptoms in the husband.

These articles seem to suggest that I am seeing a cause rather than a symptom or effect of addiction. I don't know what to think anymore.
