God expected us to protect ourselves. That is why in Ephesians 6:10-18 He gave us what we call the Christian armor. "Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the full armor of God that you might stand against the devil's schemes. For we fight not against flesh and blood but rulers powers and authorities in the heavenly realms. Put on the full armor of God that you might be able to stand in the evil day, and in the end to stand. Gird yourself with the belt of truth and having the breastplate of righteousness in place, having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of grace, take up the shield of faith to extinguish the flaming arrows of the evil one, put on the helmet of salvation and take up the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God." 
God never meant for us to go out to battle all by ourselves. He is available to us 24 hours a day, we just need to talk to Him. Open up His Word, He'll talk back to you...
